Spain 1964 - UEFA European Nations Cup
The 1964 UEFA European Nations Cup was the second edition of the great European Football Championship, endorsed by UEFA. This time the final tournament was held in Spain. This time success was at the host's side. Spain won 2-1 over defending champions Soviet Union.
The tournament was a knockout competition. One major difference for the second running of the event, however, was that 29 teams put themselves forward to play, instead of the 17 that competed for the inaugural competition (Greece withdrew after being drawn with Albania). The Soviet Union, Luxembourg, and Austria received byes into the second round. The teams played home-and-away matches until the semi-finals.The final four teams would go to the final tournament, whose host was selected after the teams became known.
Luxembourg beat the Netherlands 3-2 on aggregate (1-1 and 2-1) in the second round, and then drew with Denmark 3-3 and 2-2, before losing the replay 1-0. Denmark thus became the most surprising of the qualifiers. In the final tournament they joined to the Soviet Union, Spain, and Hungary.
In the semi-finals, the Soviet Union defeated the Danes 3-0 in Barcelona and Spain beat Hungary 2-1 in extra time in Madrid, the winning goal being scored by Amancio. Spain had withdrawn from the tournament in 1960 rather than play the Soviet Union. But on this occasion Generalisimo Francisco Franco let his team play the Soviets. Franco could not pull his team out of the game because he knew the significance of winning and because of the excitement the match had generated in the build-up with the home fans in a state of euphoria. All four goals came from Spain in the finals came from crosses from the right and the Soviets had evidently not done their homework because in the sixth minute a centre from Luis Suárez, who had joined Inter from Barcelona three year earlier, sent over the ball and Blaugrana star Jesús María 'Chus' Pereda left legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin with no chance of stopping the opening goal from going in. That lead lasted less then two minutes, however, as Fernando Olivella fouled Galimzian Khusainov who rose to score from the resulting free-kick. In front of more than 79,000 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, the Spain won 2-1 after a late goal from Marcelino.
